ASEAN ORTHOPAEDIC RESEARCH SOCIETY

BRIEF HISTORY:

A shared interest to drive and foster academic orthopaedic practices within the ASEAN Orthopaedic Association led to an interest group meeting regarding the formation of the ASEAN Orthopaedic Research Society. This took place at the Combined Myanmar Orthopaedic Society /AOA meeting and was held at the Bagan Room, Novotel Hotel in Yangon, Myanmar on 7 November 2018.

During this meeting, formation of the ASEAN Orthopaedic Research Society (AORS) under the AOA umbrella was formally approved. The draft constitution of the AORS was set out with the following objectives :

  1. To encourage, promote, develop and support basic, translational and clinical research in orthopaedic surgery and musculoskeletal disorders and related disciplines in the ASEAN region.

  2. To encourage and promote collaborative research and exchange of scientific knowledge and technologies related to orthopaedic surgery and allied disciplines in the ASEAN region.

  3. To provide a forum for sharing advances in orthopaedic surgery and related research with practising orthopaedic surgeons.

  4. To conduct, participate in or send representatives or delegates to research meetings and conferences related to orthopaedic research.

  5. To develop and encourage educational activities, and develop expertise related to research in orthopaedic surgery and musculoskeletal disorders through courses, workshops, scientific publications, fellowships and exchange programs.

The inaugural committee meeting of the AORS was held in conjunction with the Malaysian Orthopaedic Association Annual Scientific Meeting at the Tamarind Room, VASCO Restaurant, Hilton, Kuala Lumpur on 2 May 2019, closing with the election of the inaugural office-bearers :

Chairman                           : Prof Lee Eng Hin

Vice-chairman                  : Prof Tunku Kamarul Zaman

Secretary/Treasurer        : Prof Maung Mg Htwe

The Inaugural Scientific meeting of the AORS was held in conjunction with the Combined Indonesian Orthopaedic Association/AOA Meeting in Jakarta in November 2019. To recognize excellence in research, the Orthopaedic Investigator Award (AORS Award) was initiated for best abstracts within the basic and clinic-epidemiologic categories. The top 3 winning entries were presented with cash prizes generously sponsored by the Indonesian Orthopaedic Association. Barring disruptions to APOA2020 resultant from the outbreak of the Covid 19 pandemic, we remain committed to promoting research and collaboration with an upcoming online “Orthopaedic Research Training Program” and other virtual conferences.

AORS is affiliated to the Asia Pacific (ASEAN) ORS which is a member organization of the International Combined Orthopaedic Research Societies (ICORS). Please visit the ICORS website for ongoing Orthopaedic Research Society activities worldwide: http://i-cors.org/

As we continue to work with other member Orthopaedic research societies to promote basic, translational, and clinical musculoskeletal research,  it is our vision to forge partnerships between Orthopaedic surgeons, musculoskeletal researchers and industry experts  among the ASEAN nations.
