AOA Senior Travelling Fellowship

 

The Senior Traveling Fellowship also started in 1987. Each year, five senior orthopaedic surgeons from the five member countries travel together for a two-week period. Staying 4 days and 3 nights in each country, they give lectures and present research papers in their particular field of subspecialty and expertise. Occasionally they are requested to do some live surgeries. There is also the usual sports and social activities and function to attend.

Through the effort of AOA Secretary-General Ong Leong Boon, the American Orthopaedic Association (AOA) invited the Asean Orthopaedic Association in 1995 to a joint meeting.

 

This historic event was held in The Greenbrier, Roanoke, Virginia, USA. More than 50 ASEAN delegates from the five member countries attended the joint meeting. Since then, the president of the five national associations have been invited to the AOA annual meeting which is held in the USA. This has expanded the ASEAN connection and collaboration with the US and North America.

 

Similarly, through the efforts of Dr. Ong Leong Boon, ASEAN traveling fellows were sent to the EFFORT congresses, which enabled us to forge ties and collaboration with our European orthopaedic colleagues.

 

During the past several years, the current presidents of the five ASEAN national associations or their representative have been invited to attend the Annual BOA Meeting in the UK. This has likewise opened more opportunities for us to collaborate and exchange expertise with our colleagues in the United Kingdom. (From the writing of Dr Jose M.
